Changing the "Sausage Head" Narrative
The Definition
What is a "Sausage Head" Narrative? It’s when a loved one—usually someone in a health or financial crisis—dismisses your logic, your expertise, and your care by labeling you as "clueless," "controlling," or "ignorant."
When you’re being called a "sausage head" for telling the truth:
-
Stop Defending Your Resume: You don't need to prove you're smart. You know you're grounded. Let the insult hang in the air.
-
The "Agree and Disarm" Technique: * Them: "You don't know what you're talking about, you sausage head!"
-
You: "I might not know everything, but I know I love you enough to stay calm while you’re upset. Let's talk when you're ready to eat."
-
-
Label the Tactic, Not the Person: In your mind, tell yourself: "This is the illness talking." This lowers your inflammatory response because you stop taking the "bait."
The "Grounded" Takeaway
You cannot change someone who is committed to misunderstanding you. If the narrative in their head is that you are the "enemy," stop trying to be the "hero." Just be the Constant. Be the one who is still there, still healthy, and still refusing to join the circus.
